Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship

Our Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship cultivates the next generation of environmental stewards. The program works in close partnership with The Howard School to provide high school students with a career pathway into conservation through land restoration and professional development.

The Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship prepares high school students for a career in conservation through land restoration practices and ecological understanding in close partnership with The Howard School. We believe nature is for everyone, and that’s why this program aims to provide historically underrepresented communities with a voice for our environment. After completing the paid apprenticeship, our apprentices are equipped and ready to enter local conservation positions across Chattanooga.

The Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship began in June 2022 with generous support from United Way of Greater Chattanooga. After forming a close partnership with The Howard School, we hired our first paid apprentices in January 2024. Guided by Lead Naturalists Ailani Ramirez-Pineda and Emily Jackson, the apprentices delved into native landscape restoration. An initial introduction into invasive species removal soon led to a passion for botanical knowledge and plant identification. Personal growth became evident on our campus and beyond with Environmental Science teachers noting an increase in their confidence, engagement, and perseverance. Educator Ramsey Jibrin explains: “The apprenticeship and field trips have been a great way to get our students interested in the environment and comfortable with being outdoors in a natural environment.”

Today, our apprentices continue refining their skills in land conservation and professional development. They’ve garnered praise from the Southeastern Grassland Institute for diligence and fortitude during a bog restoration project. As they flourish into leaders, our apprentices share the importance of the natural world with classmates and peers.

Support the Future of Conservation

Reflection Riding’s Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship is shaping the next generation of environmental stewards by providing hands-on experience in land conservation, invasive species management, and native plant restoration. As we work toward creating a job pipeline in this field, this program is laying the foundation for workforce development in conservation and sustainable landscape management.
