Restore: Nurturing Nature's Next Generation

This year, we witnessed how a single field trip can spark a lifelong journey in conservation. For Jahore, a junior at The Howard School, that spark has grown into a blazing passion for environmental stewardship through our Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship program.

Jahore's story exemplifies the transformative power of nature. From his first visit to Reflection Riding during a school field trip, to becoming one of our apprentices alongside Blandy and Maria, Jahore has blossomed into a natural leader. His previous environmental science teacher, Amy Johnson, has watched him channel his newfound passion into school projects, from developing nature center business plans to sharing the fascinating world of cicadas with his classmates.

The impact extends far beyond individual growth. Howard School educators have noticed improved confidence, work ethic, and attendance among our apprentices. As one of his teachers, Mr. Ramsey, observes, "The apprenticeship and field trips have been a great way to get our students interested in the environment and comfortable with being outdoors in a natural environment."

Our apprentices' dedication shines through in every project they undertake, whether it's removing invasive species, propagating native plants, or supporting our Summer Camp programs. Recently, they pitched in to help restore a mountain bog habitat with Southeastern Grasslands Institute, earning high praise for their work ethic and commitment to the project.

At Reflection Riding, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to experience and become a steward of nature, regardless of where they live or their economic status. Your support helps us:

  • Provide children with hands-on environmental education

  • Offer families a safe, accessible place to explore nature together

  • Enable our nursery to continue to propagate native plant species for our community

  • Ensure the highest quality of care for the wildlife in our sanctuary

  • Support our Native Landscape Apprentices in their restoration efforts

As we look to the coming year, we invite you to help us restore more than just landscapes—help us restore opportunities, rebuild connections, and reinforce the bridge between our youth and the natural world. Your continued support ensures that more students like Jahore can discover their calling in conservation and become the environmental leaders of tomorrow.

Your support helps steward the next generation, preserving nature for tomorrow.
