Native Landscape Apprenticeship Continues to Grow
Our Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship is ramping up! We recently hired two new apprentices: Yoni and Janett. We’re taking a look at this past year’s progress and plans for the summer season.
Things are ramping up for the apprenticeship program this summer. We have recently been able to hire two new apprentices into the program: Yoni and Janett—both of whom are rising sophomores at Howard High School who were strongly recommended by their environmental science teachers. They are both hardworking, intelligent individuals, and we are excited about what they will bring to our current team!
Some activities from earlier this year include:
Winter tree identification at Reflection Riding
Learning about spring ephemerals and seed starting
Becoming familiar faces at the Campfire Concerts’ s’mores table
Engaging in March 4ward with Bridge Outdoors
Learning resume and interview skills with Angela Gerstner, Recruitment Coordinator from the Southeastern Conservation Corps.
Developing observational drawing skills for botany as part of Wild Ones’ Certificate in Native Plants program
This summer, we are focusing the bulk of our time on land conservation and cultivating a deeper love of nature in the apprentices. The apprentices have had several favorite moments so far, from potting native species in the nursery to interacting with wildlife. They enjoyed caring for a tree frog with a self-made terrarium and observing a fawn hiding in the Nursery. With school being out for the summer, we’re excited to have our apprentices on campus more often!
