Howard Apprenticeship Update - Summer 2025

Our Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship continues to grow. We’re taking a look at all the events of this past summer season.

Our Native Landscape Management Apprenticeship continues to grow! This year, our team has grown five-strong, and each apprentice continues to impress us with botanical knowledge and professionalism.

This summer, they’ve had several notable experiences:

  • Red Wolf Pen Renovation: The apprentices have been removing invasive species and native plants that are toxic to canines from the empty, lower wolf habitat. By researching safe native species for the wolves, they plan to establish these plants in the space before next winter.

  • Tennessee Aquarium Professional Development: The apprentices ventured behind-the-scenes at the Tennessee Aquarium to learn more about our waterways. It was an opportunity to connect the terrestrial habitat restoration work we are doing at Reflection Riding with the bigger ecological picture.

  • Job Shadowing with the City of Chattanooga: The goal of the apprenticeship is to prepare high-school students with the know-how to enter the conservation workforce. To share what their potential next steps are beyond the program, we shadowed the Natural Resources Team at Eastlake. Huge thank you to the City for making this happen!

Our apprentices are steadily growing into young professionals. As their plant identification and propagation skills increase, we are thrilled to see where they go from here. The next generation of environmental stewards is here.
