Sandhill Crane Safari

  • Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center 400 Garden Road Chattanooga, TN, 37419 United States (map)

Come learn about the amazing Sandhill Crane from UTC Ornithology professor Dr. David Aborn, then join us for a road trip to see these birds in the wild at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.

We will start the day with Dr. David Aborn, an ornithology professor at UTC who has been involved with Sandhill Crane research at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge for many years. At 12:30, Dr. Aborn will give a brief history and discussion about the Sandhill Crane population that is currently migrating through Tennessee. You’ll also get to see Reflection Riding’s pair of Sandhill Cranes at our Native Animal Exhibit. After seeing the cranes at Reflection Riding, our group will caravan to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Birchwood, where thousands of migratory cranes overwinter. Members of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will provide their spotting scopes and be available to answer questions about Sandhill Cranes and the many other birds that are visible from the observation deck. This will be a fun day to learn about and enjoy these magnificent birds!

Please note: Participants will drive their own cars to the refuge and may leave at any time they wish if they need to be back home at a certain time.

Make sure to arrive 20 minutes before your event and check in at the Welcome Center.
