Sandhill Crane Expedition

Come learn about the amazing Sandhill Crane from UTC Ornithology professor Dr. David Aborn, then join us for a caravan to see the birds.

Every winter, over 10,000 Sandhill Cranes winter in and around the Hiwasee Wildlife Refuge. Join us to witness this amazing seasonal phenomenon with Dr. David Aborn, an ornithology professor at UTC who has been involved with Sandhill Crane research at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge for many years. Starting at 1 pm on Reflection Riding's campus, Dr. Aborn will give a brief history and discussion about the Sandhill Crane population that is currently migrating through Tennessee.

Our group will then caravan to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Birchwood, TN where thousands of migratory cranes overwinter. Members of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will provide their spotting scopes and be available to answer questions about Sandhill Cranes and the many other birds that are visible from the observation deck. This will be a fun day to learn about and enjoy these magnificent birds!

Please note: Participants will drive their own cars to the refuge and may leave at any time they wish if they need to be back home at a certain time.

Please read and sign the general liability waiver before attending. Each adult attendee must sign this waiver to participate. Parents/legal guardians must sign a waiver for each child participating.

As an outdoor facility, our programs and events are almost always dependent on the weather. In the event of severe weather, programs may have to be canceled.
