Crossley
Our beloved Crossley the Barred Owl died on November 23, 2021, from a respiratory illness. Crossley came to Reflection Riding June 4, 2018, as a young brancher, approximately 15 weeks old. He was found on the ground in the Chattanooga area and taken to a local raptor rehabilitator. Born with a crossed beak and neurological deficits that occurred from malnutrition in the egg, he would not have survived in the wild and was placed with us. Additionally, he had an eye injury, and ultimately, one eye was removed.
In spite of his compromises, he was a larger than life animal ambassador. People were naturally drawn to him, endeared by his goofiness and beauty. He rarely met a stranger and made lots of public appearances, drawing crowds of fans. I can’t begin to imagine how many people he educated about his species and importance to our ecology. He was a regular in our Small Group Experiences, inspiring awe and gaining admirers. One guest remarked while holding him, “you’re making my dreams come true!”
It’s never easy when one of our animal ambassadors dies. They are a huge part of the Reflection Riding family.
Although his time was short with us, Crossley definitely made an impact on our staff and the people he met.
Godspeed sweet Crossley. May you fly strong forever.
