Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis)
Green Anoles are nimble lizards native to the Southeast. They prefer habitats with very high humidity and are especially common in swamps, forests, and wooded beaches. Anoles can zoom through tree canopies with specialized pads on their feet that help them grip onto different surfaces. Sometimes called the American chameleon, the anole may change color due to temperature, humidity, health, or mood. However, the animal is not a true chameleon and does mimic the surroundings.
We want to emphasize that it is illegal to own any native animal as a pet in the state of Tennessee, including this species. Please be respectful of native animals and leave them be in their natural habitat.
Our Green Anoles are visible to the public on the boardwalk near our Welcome Center.
