Virginia Opossum

Virginia Opossum

We acquired our opossums through either local rehabilitators or confiscation and placement by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Fun Facts:

  • They have 50 teeth, more than any other land mammal in the world.
  • Opossum fossils have been dated back 70 million years, to the time of the dinosaurs!
  • They are the only animals in North America – other than humans – that have opposable thumbs.  Their thumbs, though, are on their rear feet, which help them climb.
